Southern California Edison General Rate Case

STOP SCE's Rate Hikes! Your Voice Matters!

Southern California Edison (SCE) is proposing yet another rate increase for its customers, threatening the financial stability of countless people living in California. This campaign is your call to action, your opportunity to protect your hard-earned money and advocate for fair energy pricing. Here’s what you need to know:

The Alarming Facts:

  1. SCE is asking for a 17% increase in its current general rate case application.

  2. If approved, TURN projects that a typical customer can expect an increase of over $26 a month or $312 annually.

  3. This means a SCE customer working a minimum wage job will have to work 14.9 hours to pay for basic “essential service.”*

  4. SCE’s rate increases for the first half of 2023 were already 4 times the Consumer Price Index for the Los Angeles and Anaheim areas.**

  5. SCE shareholders and executives continue to rake in record profits and bonuses yearly, while 1/3 of their customers are struggling to pay the energy bill.

  6. SCE’s plan to increase rates will hinder California’s goal of 100% clean and affordable electricity adoption.

*Essential service is currently defined as 60% of average or typical usage in each climate zone

**The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. https://www.dir.ca.gov/oprl/CPI/CPICalculator/CpiCalculator.aspx.

SCE must be made to rein in spending, and regulators must be called to act to ensure rate increases do not outpace the annual cost of living.  Learn more about TURN’s efforts to CAP energy rate increases.

Personal Stories Have an Impact

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) needs to hear from you at the Public Participation Hearings for SCE’s proposed 2025 general rate case (A.23-05-010). SCE is making big growth projections to expand EV charging stations and other big money electrification infrastructure projects that will help line its’ shareholder pockets but will drain customers of every cent. Lifting stories of the reality of already struggling families will send the message to the CPUC that customers will not stand by for yet another rate hike. Here is what folks are saying about their current bills:

  • The Martinez family had fallen on hard times in their Los Angeles neighborhood. Ms. Martinez has lost her job as a babysitter, and now her only income is from selling used clothing at a swap meet. She makes $300 in a good week. She has a medically vulnerable daughter who requires constant attention. “As the bills keep rising and piling up, I am so worried about being shut off. I can’t imagine what a rate hike will mean for my family”.

  • Jose Rodriguez hurt himself on the job, and now he has difficulties paying essential bills like electricity. Without a steady paycheck and living only with his disability benefits, it becomes difficult to manage regular expenses. He applied for CARE and was accepted. However, Jose said, “Even with the CARE discount, my bill is too high”.

  • Ms. Lara, a nursing student from Los Angeles, struggles to pay her utility bills. She said, “I pay what I can- a little bit at the time, hoping it will be enough to keep the lights on”.

Demand that the CPUC do their job and regulate the utility-tell the CPUC to deny any rate increase to SCE!
