This program helps income-qualified households conserve energy and reduce their electricity costs. SCE pays all the costs of purchasing and installing energy-efficient appliances and equipment, which are free to eligible customers.
To qualify for EMA program measures, an SCE customer must:
- Meet income qualifications
- Receive electric service through a residential electric meter in SCE’s service territory, and
- Have an SCE service account, or be sub-metered under a master-meter SCE account.
Measures are available to both homeowners and renters. Renters must obtain the homeowner’s permission. Customers may only receive EMA services once every ten (10) years. Income eligibility requirements are the same as for CARE.
What services does the EMA program offer?
A qualified customer who has a working refrigerated air conditioning unit that is permanently installed may receive one or more of the following:
- In climate zones 10–15, a replacement energy-efficient window or wall air conditioner. The existing unit must be at least 15 years old.
- In climate zones 10–16, an energy-efficient evaporative cooler (also called a “swamp cooler”).
- In climate zones 14–15, replacement energy-efficient central air conditioning. The existing unit must have a SEER rating of 10 or less, OR must be at least 10 years old.
A qualified customer who has a working electric refrigerator that was manufactured before 1993 and at least 10 cubic feet in size may receive a free replacement that will use much less energy than the old model.
Pool Pump Replacement
A qualified customer residing in a Single-Family home with an in-ground pool may be eligible to receive a free replacement energy-efficient pool pump.
A qualified customer with electric space heating may be eligible to receive free weatherization services, where SCE makes repairs or improvements that help keep a home warm in winter and cool in summer.
Note: Customers with natural gas space heating should contact their local natural gas provider for weatherization services.
- Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which use up to 70% less energy than ordinary incandescent bulbs and last 7 to 8 times longer.
- Replacement outdoor fixtures with CFLs may also be provided.
- A qualified customer who has a working incandescent or halogen torchiere may receive a replacement energy-efficient torchiere.
